New York Fashion Week ended with a splash (quite literally) with Coca Rocha closing out the Christian Siriano fashion show (at his home in Connecticut) by dunking herself into the pool in a fabulous red gown! Nothing short of outdoor venues, the SS2021 shows made history in that they were unlike any other fashion month we have ever seen. With the close of NYFW, it time to take a look at the upcoming trends for the next year.

Of course, face masks are a major 2020 trend! Seen in designer collections including but not limited to Christian Siriano who’s models donned outfit-matching face masks, Anna Sui who’s models donned embroidered face masks, and Chromat x Reebok who’s models donned vibrant, colorful face masks.

Bucket hats and wide brim hats will also continue to trend. As seen at the Maxhosa Africa show and the Anna Sui show, bucket hats have taken on an alternative look. Long gone are the canvas dad hats that we’re used to. Now, patterns, mesh, and patchwork are incorporated into bucket hat designs.

Lilac and mint are two trending colors we have seen all up and down the runways. Considering the Pantone Color of the Year (2020) is Classic Blue and the 2021 Color of the Year is A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) Aqua, this comes as a surprise. But the color combination is refreshing and springlike, which is exciting for coming designs.

Previously, elbow-length opera gloves were trending. But this season, short gloves stole the show with fishnet fabrics, embellishments from embroidery to pearls, and frilly wrist adornments.

Ruffled sleeves are a signature of the cottagecore trend. Seen at various shows included Rodarte, Raisavanessa, and Ann Sui, ruffled sleeves vary from fluttering short sleeves to long sleeves with continuous movement in the spring breeze.

Loungewear has become the stay-at-home uniform of this pandemic. With that in mind, various designers were sure to include at least a few loungewear looks in their collections. From comfy, cozy cardigans to sweatsuits, it seems like our loungewear collection is about to get better and better.
