The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences appears to be launching an official investigation into Will Smith’s internet-breaking conduct.
Pinkett Smith, whose head is shaved, has spoken openly about her alopecia diagnosis, thus the joke hit a nerve. During the 2016 Oscars, when some people, including the Smiths, were boycotting because of the #OscarsSoWhite scenario, Rock made a joke about her. “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” Rock stated at the time.
Smith sat back in his seat after engaging with rock and yelled at the comic to “keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.” Smith won Best Actor for his depiction of Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, within an hour. Smith apologized to the Academy during his award speech, but not formally to Rock.
Although the event was reported to the LAPD, Rock chose not to file a police complaint or press any charges.
And the move divided the entertainment industry, with some applauding Smith’s actions for stepping up to protect his wife, while others, like writer-producer Marshall Herskovitz, called for the Academy to take disciplinary action against the recently acclaimed actor.
On Twitter, Herskovitz stated, “He disgraced our entire community tonight.”
“We’re not going to take that Oscar from him,” Whoopi Goldberg, a member of the Academy’s Board of Governors, said Monday on ABC’s The View. “I’m sure there will be consequences,” she added.
Oscars’ Incident: Black Twitter And Black Hollywood Weigh In
The 94th Annual Academy Awards were bland and uneventful until the commotion surrounding the presentation of Best Documentary Feature (of which Questlove won for Summer of Soul). Will Smith destroyed everyone’s faces as he stormed the stage to slap the Earth, Wind, and Fire out of comic Chris Rock after the latter made a jab at Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Jada, can’t wait for G.I. Jane 2,” the comic quipped while introducing the finalists. She has previously stated that she suffers alopecia. (Demi Moore had a buzzcut in the original G.I. Jane.)
Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes had a terrific triple hosting job, and Dune and Coda both won Oscars, including Best Picture.
Black Twitter went into overdrive with videos and memes to show how unexpected this tragedy was and how it impacted people in Black Hollywood…. Here are some of the most popular reactions to the Smith/Rock feud, as well as some celebrities who weighed in on the debate.
