Whoever Olivia Rodrigo’s “Deja Vu” was about certainly has serious regrets about introducing his new lover to Billy Joel’s music. The 19-year-old pop star made a surprise appearance at Joel’s concert on Wednesday night (August 24) at Madison Square Garden, performing her smash track “Sour” and staying onstage to help sing “Uptown Girl.” She later posted about her enthusiasm over the experience on Instagram.

Rodrigo wrote in all caps, “I SANG WITH BILLY JOEL AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN TODAY ARE U KIDDING?” beside a video she claims to have recorded of Joel performing “Piano Man” from her own place in the audience immediately after she left the stage.

She also shared a video and several photographs from her on-stage time with the 73-year-old legend, one of which she captioned with a red heart emoji.

The “Driver’s License” singer thanked Billy Joel for his support and added, “Biggest honor ever still crying thank u Billy!!!!!!!!” in the caption of a selfie she posted of the two of them backstage.

While on stage with Joel, Rodrigo expressed her admiration by remarking, “I’m such a huge fan.” This was right before the pair launched into “Deja Vu.” Then, with the “We Didn’t Start the Fire” pianist providing accompaniment, she said, “And, uh, I kind of wrote this next song about you.”

The song was the No. 3 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rodrigo sings, “I’ll bet that she knows Billy Joel ’cause you played her ‘Uptown Girl,'” referencing his ex-boyfriend’s attempt to reenact key moments from their relationship with his new lover. It made sense for her to join Joel on stage to perform the 1983 classic she had alluded to in her own song.
