Kim Russell, a.k.a. The Kimbino, is swiftly establishing herself as the internet’s go-to digital fashion archive. The 26-year-Instagram old’s feeds are a never-ending stream of great moments in recent fashion history, expertly combined with her own clever commentary.
“Another day, another dress that pushes me to forgive Carrie for her shenanigans,” Sarah Jessica Parker captioned a snapshot of herself from an episode of Sex and the City. Her long filthy blonde [ponytail] and ChloĆ© Spring 2001 horse trousers.”
Her inspirations span from Mariah Carey’s early red carpet appearances to Emma Watson’s Gaultier spring 1994 gown, which she wore at the age of thirteen. Russell has more than 121,000 Instagram followers, including Marc Jacobs and Bella Hadid.
It’s a testimonial to her abilities (not everyone receives a Happy Birthday tweet from Kim Kardashian, Russell’s longtime admirer). Russell’s popularity is only expanding as a result of her personable banter and astute views. She takes Vogue through some of her greatest moments in fashion history in honor of Black History Month.
Tracee Ellis Ross and Diana Ross for Thierry Mugler, Spring 1992
On a runway that never disappoints, this presentation is one of the most magnificent moments between mother and daughter. It seemed like a watershed moment in Tracee Ellis Ross’s style and fashion career. Diana Ross has had a huge impact on fashion designers and the industry as a whole. It was lovely to see Tracee’s mother leading her down the runway for her solo walk. I certainly support nepotism in this case.
Serena Williams in a Denim Skirt at the US Open, 2004
In a tennis match, who wins wearing a denim skirt and sneaker boots? Serena Williams is a brilliant performer, and the fact that she was able to properly incorporate fashion into a tennis match is something that no one else has done.
Luther Vandross at an Oprah Magazine Party, 2000
It’s so uncommon for males of that generation to pull a look, yet he did just that. We’d only ever seen Tom Ford’s Gucci menswear on models, so seeing this sumptuous silk top and python pants on a Black man was incredible.
Janet Jackson Wearing Custom Alexander McQueen for the Super Bowl, 2004
Who doesn’t care about Janet Jackson and the Super Bowl? When we found out that the gown she was wearing was designed by Alexander McQueen, we were all even more intrigued by the entire experience. It makes you wish that, instead of the uproar [that followed], more people enjoyed the fashion and occasion for what it was.
Seal Wearing Early Raf Simons, 1997
It can be difficult to identify moments in men’s fashion that truly inspire a large number of fashion fans, but this is one of them. Seal was a huge fan of Raf Simons before he became famous, and we’re all glad it’s been documented.
