The 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced Tuesday, July 12th. This year’s list included former US President Barack Obama, the late actor Chadwick Boseman, Tyler James Williams, Trevor Noah, Stan Lathan, W. Kamau Bell, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Donald Glover.
Obama was nominated for Outstanding Narration for the documentary Our Great National Parks, which he narrated. In the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance category, Boseman was nominated after his death for his work as the voice of T’Challa, aka Black Panther, in the animated series What If…?” For his role in Abbott Elementary, Tyler James Williams was nominated for the first time for Supporting Actor in a Comedy.
Donald Glover was nominated for Lead Actor in a Comedy for his role in Atlanta, and Trevor Noah’s talk show The Daily Show With Trevor Noah was nominated for Outstanding Variety Talk Series. Stan Lathan’s work on Dave Chappelle’s The Closer got him a nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special. W. Kamau Bell was nominated for two awards for his docuseries We Need to Talk About Cosby. He was nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program and Outstanding Narrator.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar was nominated for Outstanding Narrator for his work on Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War. He will compete against Obama in this category.
This year, Boseman, James, and Obama are all running for the first time. Noah has been nominated for an Emmy 13 times, and he won once for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.
Glover has been nominated for an Emmy ten times and has won two, for Outstanding Director for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
Bell has been nominated for an Emmy nine times and won three of them, including one for the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.
Jabbar has been nominated twice, and Lathan has been nominated six times and won three for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special and Outstanding Variety Special.
