With NYFW wrapped and international fashion month in full swing, it is time for a round-up of some very early trend predictions.
Make Way for Balloons – The Party’s Just Begun!
First and foremost, let us begin with the drama and flair. By far my favorite trend is the billowy bubble/balloon sleeves we have seen swishing all up and down the runway. Statement sleeves (from bell to ruffle) have been all the rage over the past few seasons but balloon sleeves are bursting into our wardrobes in a theatrical way. Since spotted in street style last September, balloon sleeves have popped up in several shows including but not limited to Area and Marc Jacobs. So long simple silhouettes, hello strong shoulders!
Athleisure is here to stay!
Spotted! At an innumerable amount of shows (Liu Yong x Rishkensh, Matty Bovan, Chromat, etc) – athleisure has hit the runway once again! In the past five years, there hasn’t been a day when a yoga pant or a sports bra didn’t make an appearance at brunch instead of pilates. The trend continues. Sidenote: How long before a trend becomes a staple?
My personal faves: The vibrant workout co-ords layered under lightweight spring jackets seen at Liu Yong x Rishkensh. The sturdy windbreaker jacket and pants seen at Matty Bovan. And a surprising newcomer to the scene; an athletic midi skirt featured in the Chromat show!
Welcome Back
Models in shows from Indonesian Diversity to Area bared all with open and plunging backs. With a nod to our entrance into our very own roaring 20’s, designers are featuring quite a few pieces with the “party-in-the-back” silhouettes popularized in the 1920s.
Step Aside Guys
Menswear has been one of the biggest and longest lasting trends to hit the fashion scene. This season, we are seeing a ton of strong blazers and excellently tailored suits!
Elegance – Within Arms Reach
Gloves of all lengths and textures were part of the accessories line up during the SS2020 shows. From elbow-length sheer gloves at the Savage x Fenty show to sleek and chic leather gloves at the Tommy x Zendaya show, this look is (thankfully) here to stay!
That 70’s Show
Fashion is cyclical. We know it and we live by it. The 20’s influence will bring elegance to our wardrobes. But the 70’s influence will bring effortlessly casual looks with tunics and flowing maxis and a bit of vibrant glam with paisley prints, vibrant oranges and pinks, and silk headscarves to top it all off.
Honorable Mentions
Snakeskin, wide-brim hats, and colorful hosiery
