Gaby Spartz never thought her childhood computer hobby would one day turn into a thriving internet business where she and her husband, Emerson, are able to launch a new website almost every month. Spartz Inc. is the host to some of the most popular websites on the internet, including GivesMeHope, OMGFacts, MuggleNet, and various fandom sites.
“I never really realized at any given time,” said Spartz about her career. “It just slowly developed into my career. When I was 12 I really liked computers and I had a small blog and I loved spending time on it.” Over the years that blog became the basis for her future.
“After I graduated from college, none of us had jobs,” said Spartz. “I was like, well, I have this other thing. I would post personal things and pictures of cute animals and eventually it evolved into the first site in our network, GivesMeHope.”
Gaby finds inspiration for new sites from the world around her. “We pretty much launch sites to inspire people,” she said. “We want to inspire people, make them laugh, and educate them, like in a fun way.” Spartz Inc. also looks into growing popular culture trends to decide when to launch a new fandom website.
But it is all plenty of work and Gaby knows about the difficulties of entrepreneurship. “It’s important and difficult for us to give each site the proper care it deserves,” said Spartz. Spartz Inc. has about a 25 person team, with everybody working long hours.
“It’s hard,” Spartz said, thinking of advice for future entrepreneurs. “Just go for it, though. Surround yourself with the right type of people and just go for it. You can be paralyzed by fear but you can’t pursue a dream if you don’t take a leap of faith. You don’t know until you try.”
