New York City is a major hub for all things entertainment, from music to theatre to movies and television. Amidst this greatness, we have Angela Yee, radio personality for New York’s Power 105.1 radio station. Many are familiar with her work on The Breakfast Club with DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God, as well as her interviews with various celebs throughout her career. Angela is a powerful woman whose career skyrocketed to a place even she didn’t think was in her future.
“Radio wasn’t something I went to school for,” said Yee. “I wanted to be a teacher in college. I did this urban teaching program and was teaching English and history, so I could’ve been a teacher. Funny thing is the only reason I decided I didn’t want to do it is because I didn’t want to get up that early in the morning. Now I get up at 4 am.”
Her crazy hours aren’t the only obstacle Angela has faced in her career. “When I started, the fact was that I wasn’t that well-versed in what was going on in current events in the news was tough,” stated Yee. “It’s also hard to deal with the attention you get from everything you do. People care about what you’re wearing, what you look like, everything.”
But Angela didn’t let any of these things get in her way. She had this advice to offer to anybody considering a career similar to hers: “Get as much airtime as possible, make sure you get experience. Know you’re going to work for free or for very little. Just be persistent but treat everybody well. You never know who could help you out later on.”
In the end, Angela is happy with where she ended up. And look out for anything new coming from her. “I’m very interested in writing. I’ve always wanted to be a writer. That’s the next thing I’m working on actually.”
