Gwyneth Paltrow is the latest celebrity catapulted into the controversy surrounding the use of the “N-word” on social media sites.
Recently, while in Paris for the Watch the Throne tour, Paltrow took to twitter to express her excitement. She penned the simple tweet, “Niggas in Paris for real”, directed towards The Dream, referencing Kanye and Jay-Z’a performance of the song “Niggas in Paris”.
Although Paltrow merely referenced the song, many angry twitter-users slammed the star for using derogatory and racial terms. Many were appalled by her ease in using such a word, taking it as far as calling her a racist.
The Dream was one of the first to speak up in Paltrow’s defense, pointing out that society places too much power in words. He tweeted, “Nigga doesn’t have any power over me which is why this will be the last thing I say about it. A word means something when you react to it.”
I’m on The Dreams side! It’s ignorant to attack a fan for repeating what our favorite musicians put into their songs, no matter their stature. In all honesty, if people really have a problem with using the “N-word” then our fight should be with rappers who make society feel the word has lost its meaning.
Tell us your opinion on Gwyneth Paltrow using the “N-word”, or just on the “N-word” in general.
