Author - Shakira Sealey

Shakira Sealey was born on April 22, 1986 in Brooklyn NY. Although she was raised in Brooklyn, she managed to be multicultural, as her family is descendants from Guyana, South America and Trinidad. Being the youngest and only girl in her family one would think that she was spoiled- but not Shakira. Her parents were very strict with instilling proper morals and values in order to function in and outside of the home. Her parents came from a rough life in Guyana and were responsible for caring for their brothers and sisters. As a result it was imperative that her parents made certain that life is not a walk in the park- if you want to obtain success you must work hard and give your best at all times. They also stressed with their children that you can be anything you want to be and no dream is too small or big to accomplish. Her parent’s words of encouragement and her strict upbringing fueled the fire for the person she is and is becoming today.

In life everyone has a specific purpose. We are put on earth to fulfill specific things and the people we meet throughout our journey are for specific reasons, whether good or bad. Also, everyone is instilled with a gift and we go through life either searching for what that gift is or taking time to perfect our gift that we were born with. For Shakira, although she is multitalented, her special gift was her love for writing and her appreciation for literature. From the tender age of 5 instead of playing with the blocks and dolls at playtime, she would walk over to the IBM computer and ask her teacher to help her type up a short story. Every time she had the opportunity to get near a computer or had the tools of a paper and a pencil ort even a crayon, Shakira would just write about whatever came to mind. That specific moment in her life was the first signs of something beautiful that was going to blossom in the future. Growing up, Shakira would always say to people, “ Make sure you remember my face because I am going to be a Star!” She always had a special drive, determination and star-like presence where she just knew that she was going to be successful. She got a thrill in high school and college participating in debates- she loved a good argument, especially when she knew she was right. Her ability to think critically, look outside the box and maintain a fun spirit made it clear to her that her calling was to write and later defend, which revealed her passion to become a district attorney.

Shakira is currently a senior at Brooklyn College completing her degree in Journalism. She is a writer for Fuzion magazine and also a writer for College Enquirer.com. She has future plans to have her own publishing company and attend law school to fulfill her dream of an attorney. She has one child, Joshua, who she calls her “ miracle baby.” Her son now fulfills the place of her parents, as he is the fuel that drives her to keep her dreams alive and work hard to achieve them in spite of any adversity that she’s faced with. “ I can give testimony from experience that god is truly in control and there’s sunshine after the rain.”
