Long-time CNN personality and journalist, Anderson Cooper has finally opened up publicly about his sexuality after years of speculation of whether or not Cooper was indeed straight.

The announcement came in the form of an e-mail sent to The Daily Beast columnist Andrew Sullivan. “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud,” Cooper wrote.

Following his announcement, fans of Cooper showered him with support and positivity for taking such a daring step. The star has publicly dodged questions focusing on his sexual orientation, finding that for professional reasons it was best to retain some privacy. According to the Huffington Post, Cooper is the sixth openly gay news anchor however, is the most high-profile of the six.

News of the anchor coming out may have come as a shock to some, however, many have asked the question “Does it even matter?” We have entered a time where gay marriages are accepted and prominent as well as a time where we a more accepting and understanding to alternative lifestyles.
